Stuff like this bothers me. As much as I don’t want to see a dog being tortured and killed, I don’t feel it’s right to oppose dog meat restaurants if you don’t show any concern for pigs, cows, chickens, and other animals killed in much greater numbers in ‘Merica.
The number of dogs killed annually for food is less than two-thirds of the number of animals killed in US pet shelters every year. Many puppy mills show definite signs of neglect and manage breeding poorly. Chickens on farms owned by big ‘Merican companies can barely walk due to genetic engineering that makes them grow faster than their organs can handle. It seems more people speak out against the treatment of any animal in a foreign country than in their own. (Asian countries tend to get hit the hardest by such internet activism, usually by English-speaking users)
How do we even confirm that these dogs are universally treated poorly and killed “brutally?” You can never trust videos about “animal abuse” to show the truth; PETA’s infamous fur farm video was staged, (no fur farm would skin its animals alive if it wished to make a profit. In fact, I’m tempted to say that fur farm animals are some of the most humanely treated farm critters) and most others give equally misleading or incorrect information.
At the end, it’s really the second column under “By signing this petition I support the following:” that irks me: “Dogs are people’s companions and helpers, not livestock for meat. Dog farms, raising dogs for food and killing them for meat should be made illegal. Selling dog meat in restaurants has to be banned.”
What makes a dog, cat, horse, guinea pig, or even a whale superior to a pig, cow, chicken, or turkey? By signing that petition, you are not supporting animal welfare; you’re supporting a double standard.
Change your tumblr display photo to a cartoon from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until monday (Dec.6) there should be no human faces on tumblr, but an invasion of memories. This is for violence against children.
